CHAPTER TWELVE

Calder blew up my phone, and I took morbid delight in rejecting each and every call. Of course, he could lock up the station and follow me, but I suspected he wouldn’t. He had a town full of treasure hunters to deal with. Closing the police station wasn’t an option. Instead, he’d have to call Deputy Biden back and wait for her to take over before he could leave, which suited me just fine. I needed time and space.

Pushing through the door of Rivers café, I headed toward the table I usually shared with Doris and took a seat. I’d barely picked up the menu when the bell above the door chimed, and I glanced up to see Doris charging inside.

“There you are!” she declared, taking the seat opposite. “What are we having?”

I tossed the menu on the table. “Anything. You choose. I don’t care.”

“Oh dear. Was Calder mad about the phone?” Doris sympathized.

“He knew,” I hissed, leaning across the table. “He’s known all along that I’m SIA. Harding called him.”

“Oh.” She nodded, then said, “Ooooooh.”

“Exactly.” I sat back, folding my arms across my chest.

“But that’s a good thing, isn’t it? Because he knows. And now you know he knows. So, no more lies, yeah? Which was what you wanted.”

“I guess.” She was right. Let’s face it, Doris had a habit of being right. But it still stung, and I had to laugh at myself because this would be exactly how Calder would feel right now if he hadn’t known and I’d just told him. Only the shoe was on the other foot, and it was me left smarting. “This was not how I expected it to go down.”

“Twice in one day, ladies.” River approached, her smile wide.

“How goes the treasure hunt?” Doris asked. The café was empty except for us, not a hunter in sight. It was blissful.

“All good, although I hear you had some excitement, Holly. Someone planted a fake clue, so people harassed you?”

“You heard about that, huh?”

“Jensen was in earlier, going through the pile of clues he left me to hand out to make sure there weren’t any of the fake ones amongst them.” River patted my shoulder. “Sorry that happened to you. I know you value your privacy.”

“What was your clue? For this place?” Doris asked.

“Oh, um, let me see if I remember it.” River squished up her face while trying to remember.

“What can run but never walks,

Has a mouth but never talks,

Has a head but never weeps,

Has a bed but never sleeps?”

“A river. Clever. So, people either came to the café or they came to you, the person,” I said.

River nodded. “Yep. One and the same, really. Can I interest you ladies in the special? Apple pie with ice cream and a milkshake?”

“You know what”—I smiled—“that sounds perfect.”

“Make it two,” Doris declared, tossing her menu onto the table.

“Coming right up.” River hurried away to get our order while I sat and pondered the treasure hunt, grateful to have something to focus on other than Calder and, you know, the truth.
